Shakespeare was very good friends with Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Elizabeth I, however, was ruler of England. Protestant England was constantly under attack by Catholic France and Spain. On top of that, not even everyone in her OWN country would listen to her. There were various attacks, and many people also attempted to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth had the most sophisticated spy ring of her time, which quite literally had eyes and ears everywhere. Christopher Marlowe's quick downfall started when he was arrested.
If war wasn't enough, there was also the plague. Ever since the first outbreaks in the 14th century, plague returned from time to time. In 1603 and 1608, the plague struck London and the Globe Theater was closed.
